Multi Day Trips

Trip Overview
Want the ultimate steelhead fishing experience? Look no further. We offer the absolute best in luxury, all-inclusive, multi-day guided steelhead fishing on the Lower Salmon River in Idaho. This five day, 60-mile journey is nothing short of spectacular. Our anglers will enjoy breathtaking scenery, exhilarating whitewater rapids, and world-class steelhead fishing opportunities. If you are looking for the trip of a lifetime, this is the one for you.

Our trip begins near the town of Whitebird, ID at the Hammer Creek boat ramp. From here our guests set off to fish through remarkable river. Whether you prefer to swing a fly for steelhead or fish tradition gear, we have you covered. Our anglers have the opportunity to fish water that’s ideal for all types of angling. Idaho’s famous A and B run steelhead make their journey through this section with minimal fishing pressure. The fish here are abundant and aggressive, and our groups often go five days without seeing another angler. We fish this section towards the beginning of the steelhead run, making for some of the best opportunity to catch these fish on a swung fly and sometimes even on dry flies.

Each day our guests enjoy the most comfortable camping possible. We use large wall tents to provide the most space and amenities for our clients, since the weather outside during fishing season can be chilly and damp. Wake up in the morning to wood stove heat, and enjoy a delicious hot breakfast and hot cup of coffee. Put on your waders in the comfort of your river home, and float down river with your fishing guide while our other gear boatmen break down camp. Our guests float until mid-afternoon then stop to refuel with a delicious lunch spread on a pristine white sand beach. Around this time you’ll see your camp guides leapfrog your boat, and float down to your next camp to set up. Fish the remainder of daylight and arrive in the early evening to a fully set up camp. Take your waders off while enjoying scrumptious appetizers and a well-deserved beverage. Sit back and tell fishing stories of the day while our camp chefs prepare an absolutely gourmet riverside meal. Climb into your sleeping bag on top of a comfortable cot and let the sound of the river lull you to sleep. The best part? You get to wake up the next day and do it all over again. These trips are capped off with a fun and beautiful jet boat ride up the Snake River to Pittsburgh Landing. Trip costs include jet boat ride.

As always, Idaho Steelhead Guides utilizes the best fishing guides in the country. They are professional and highly knowledgeable. Idaho Steelhead Guides also utilizes modern, state of the art fishing equipment to make sure our guests have the best tools available to fish for steelhead. Our trips are fully catered with almost all of the fishing gear needed being provided; however guests are welcome to use personal fishing equipment, if that is preferred.

We are more than happy to accommodate any style of fishing, including traditional gear/bait fishing as well as fly fishing. For more information on specific equipment and gear recommendations, please check out our “Gear Lists” tab. No matter what your angling skill level is, we will utilize the best spots on the river to suit your abilities.

Generally speaking, our multi-day steelhead trips start at the end of September and end mid-November. For more details on available launch dates check out the Dates & Rates tab.

Rapids along our 5 day Lower Salmon excursions consist of mostly Class II and III whitewater with a couple of exciting Class IV rapids. Due to the more advanced whitewater encountered in this section, Idaho Steelhead Guides guests will often travel on rafts and occasionally drift boats. Camp equipment is carried on a very large gear boat style raft as to not clutter or constrain our guest boats. We reserve the right to carefully select the appropriate watercraft to make your trip as safe and comfortable as possible.

Seasons & Techniques
Techniques for fishing for steelhead on the Salmon River is somewhat dictated by time of the year, weather trends, and river flows (please see Dates & Rates tab). Our season generally begins in mid-September and runs through the end of March, however our multi day steelhead fishing trips are only offered during the fall months from late September through November. Our expert guides are capable of guiding you no matter what your preferred method is, however we suggest booking your trip during the best time of year for that technique.

Fly Fishing with Swung Flies with Spey/Switch Rods

  • If your preferred technique is to swing flies using a two-handed spey fly rod, we suggest booking your trip during the timeframe of mid to late-September and early to mid-December. September and October present the best opportunities to fish dry lines and dry flies. As the season progresses and the water temperature continues to drop, our guides like to utilize sink tips and sometimes larger flies. Although we would love to catch steelhead on nothing but dry flies, conditions and weather often dictate the most effective way to fish.
  • Fly fishing is our specialty and preferred method. If you are new to the two-handed fly rod scene, we encourage you to join us for a couple of reasons: Our guides are the fishiest guys/gals on the river, and they are great at giving casting lessons and feedback. With a bit of guidance and input, we promise to boost your confidence to fishing more consistently and effectively. We’ll make sure to fish the best spots on the river that suit your abilities.

Gear Fishing

  • Gear fishing using plugs, bait or a combination of both can be utilized throughout the entire fishing season. We can utilize gear fishing on any of our multi day fishing trips.
